Welcome to Wellness Week

This week I will be diving into the 8 Dimensions of Wellness; the key elements in our lives that makeup our overall wellbeing. Although we often think of physical and emotional health alone, all 8 are critical to our health.


It’s Wellness Week, folks! I don't know about you, but nothing makes me feel more present and reflective than days by the beach and sand in my toes.


But now that these summer days are fleeting, we face the transition from warmth and freedom to comfort and ritual. For me, autumn has always felt like a beginning; new school year, new opportunities, an awakening of friendships, and/or a shift on our axis - literally.


It is in this time that it feels perfect to reflect on our wellness.

Since AOAT’s inception I have talked about wellness as a means for finding fulfillment. The Find Your Ace packet (that you can freely download when you subscribe to the blog) was developed using a specific wellness philosophy.

Yes, the idea of in packet is to assess your “Ace status” and give you hobby inspiration, but the content is driven by the recognition of the 8 Dimensions of Wellness.

The 8 Dimensions of Wellness were derived for SAMHSA from a concept originally published by Dr. Margaret Swarbrick. Essentially, Swarbrick’s thesis was that wellness is holistic and multi-dimensional.

Before this post turns into a college essay, I will take you through each of the proposed 8 Dimensions of Wellness.

Based on their title, you may have some intuition as to what each means. When I was originally introduced to this concept, I thought the same thing. I thought, for example, environmental must mean getting outside and feeling fresh air.

While that definition does fall under it, the environmental dimension is better characterized as a space that promotes positive well-being, aka your house, room, city, and, yes, time in nature.

This is why I find it so intriguing to analyze the 8 dimensions and see how I manage them in my life. It is often we hear about being conscious of our physical and mental health, but it is not common to talk about the other 6 dimensions.

This week (+ a day or two), I will be highlighting a dimension each day on my Instagram and Facebook page. Not only do I want to share the understanding of each dimension (because it isn’t common sense), but I want to show you how I work them into my life.

There will be an Instagram takeover, some personal chats with your girl Ace, and more!

I hope you enjoy the week, learn something new, and feel empowered to make a change in your wellness journey.


A CANDID, EXPLANATORY NOTE

Here’s my whole angle. The AOAT blog is trying to get people to focus on these dimensions, but more specifically the intellectual dimension. The intellectual dimension is categorized by lifelong learning and *cue trumpet* hobbies.

We don’t hear about this dimension often, but it effects and promotes all other dimensions. It is so important in my life that I created an entire blog to promote this idea to my peers. You, friend, have just heard about it. That is why I keep writing. 🥰
